What is Take n?

Take n is a project by Cassia Price (director, writer, script editor) and Richard Flint (cinematographer).

We’re aiming to make 12 films this year - one per month - focusing on narrative short films.

The main goal is to gain more experience developing and producing films that we care about, and to build our network of like-minded filmmakers and creatives.

We've worked together on several projects in the past, most recently on a documentary about drag kings (Kingdom).

FAQ

Why is it called Take n?

We were originally going to call the project Take 12, but we thought this placed too much pressure on actually hitting 1 per month… This is still the goal, but if we make 11, we’ll still be happy! So n is just standing in for a number that’s hopefully 12.

What are the films?

We're working with several scriptwriters to develop 12 scripts for the year. The focus will be narrative short films, but we are open to producing other films too e.g. short documentaries. We will update the tiles above as specific films move through pre-production, production, post-production, and release.

How long will the films be?

We're generally aiming for films between 2 to 10 minutes long, and between 2 to 10 pages of script. This is a flexible goal, and is mostly driven by budget and time constraints. We are open to making longer films if feasible.

Which roles are we looking for?

We’re looking for everything and everyone!

There are definitely some roles that are critical in small crews e.g. production sound recordists, gaffers, ADs etc. and of course actors, but this of course also varies between scripts, and we are keen to work with people across all departments.

We are also keen to work with pre and post production people, in particular writers, editors, graders and composers / sound editors, but again, this also varies by script.

Overall, if you are interested in the project, just drop us a message and let us know which role(s) you would like to support, and we'll be in touch!

Do we pay for crew?

The short answer is: yes and no. We are looking for both paid and unpaid involvement in the project.

We believe strongly in paying people for their work, especially when bringing in experienced individuals to carry out technical production roles. If this is you, feel free to send your day rate and we will definitely keep you in mind.

We are generally only able to pay for roles that are a must-have for a particular script or set e.g. when sound or lighting or costume etc. are especially important and / or complicated, and where we definitely need someone with experience and kit to help.

As with a lot of short films though, this is a self-funded project, and one where the emphasis is much more on learning, experience, experimentation and building networks. We definitely can’t afford to hire professional crews for every set, and we will be pulling in lots of favours from our friends and family (e.g. if you do join us on any set, you will very likely experience Richard's mum's cooking!)

This makes the project better suited to people who are looking for similar experiences to us e.g. to build new and / or different skills and experiences, to expand their networks, and to take ownership over larger creative departments on a film. If this is you, then definitely get in touch, either for a single film or as part of the core team if you’re keen to be involved more consistently over the entire year.

We’re also happy to reciprocate support. Cassia works as a professional script editor and Richard can DoP, AC, gaff and grip to a reasonable level, and even do a bit of sound. If these are roles you need on your projects, then definitely get in touch.

Where will we film the films?

We will likely film most of the films in London, as this is where we are both based. We may also film some films in the Lake District and / or Cornwall, as we have family connections here. We may also film some films outside of these locations if required by the script, but this will likely be the exception.

What will we do with these films?

We haven’t thought too hard about distribution yet. If we think one or more films are good enough, we will definitely consider entering them into festivals, and we’ve had reasonable success both in the UK and internationally over the last few years.

Equally, we’re also thinking about other forms of distribution e.g. social media, but this is still TBC.

We will also definitely do a cinema screening of all n films at the end of the year too.

How to get involved?

If you are interested in getting involved, either as an actor, crew member and / or production team member, or if you just want to find out more, we'd love to hear from you.
